Alternative story regarding a 'what-if' scenario in Rise 6 if the Shakespearens and Axel's Gang had not been defeated at Gonair due to a stroke of (mis)fortune.
This story assumes during Rise 6:
- Lucas still betrayed Margaret's team
- The team chose to do a fighting retreat and make one last stand in Gonair near the time machine.
- No one is confirmed KIA.
----------
This would be it. One last stand. Glorious or otherwise, Margaret could only hold some pride that they had caused so much damage to Ray's encroaching army. Even if they had failed the galaxy and would be forgotten, they could at least do this out of spite. It would be their choice, not the choices that Ray had made in the past. And he would remember this fact.
They still had the time machine, but the preparations were not set. And being this close to the fight, the likelihood of the vessel making it through the battle were slim at best. If only they had been faster, then maybe, just maybe, they could have escaped further into the past to stop Ray.
As the Hive approached with an army of clones and Acheans in support, the Immortal-Human hybrid readied her weapons. They would go down fighting. Any fate Ray had in store for them would be worse than death. He had a plan for any situation and it often meant making someone suffer.
Ray's Hive mech surrounded itself with nanites, clouds of miniature machines akin to a swarm of flies surrounding a rotting corpse. The assassin's mech stood at the front offering itself as a challenge to the mercenaries. Ray knew full well of the capabilities of his machine and it was likely he was more than confident he could shrug off any hit to allow either the Hive or his supporting army to capture the mercenaries.
The comms then activated to life as Ray made himself known.
"You best stand down Margaret. I would prefer if we could make this simple. This isn't Rise. You cannot win here."
"Won't stop us from trying to kill you," Margaret growled before flourishing her blade. All of her closest allies then took up fighting positions around the time machine, weapons primed with sights set on target.
"Maim them, but ensure they are taken them alive," Ray ordered to the army that stood behind him. The burned man narrowed his eyes with a slight scowl at how difficult Margaret would make this for him. "They will serve as an excellent example."
It did not take a second for the field exploded into violence and mayhem.
------
It only took a matter of minutes for what remained of the ruins of Gonair to be flattened. Everywhere Ray's allies were met by fierce resistance from Margaret's mercenaries and the remains of Axel's team. The mercenaries had been backed into a corner and fought like demons, simply to make Ray bleed.
And in the center of this conflict were Ray and Margaret in a duel for supremacy.
Margaret's swift blade cut through the air, slicing through the swarm of nanites that made up the majority of the Hive's body and weapons. Each precise strike sent pieces scattering across the ruins that immediately sought to reform with the Hive or strike back at the assailant. If it were not for the plasma blasts from Margaret’s wrist cannons that incinerated the nanites, then the Hive would have overtaken her long ago. Still, if the cowgirl had any chance of winning this fight, it would be a long and arduous process to kill Ray. Let alone harm him.
Still, Ray did not appear to be even remotely threatened if one were to judge his stance. He simply approached Margaret as he were impending doom that could not be stopped.
The Hive then gestured to the sky. "Stop making this difficult. The world we have now is better than anything that existed. Why fight it? Even if you win, you know full well of my power."
"If it was so much better? Why all this?" Margaret struck once more only for armoured wings to shield the Hive. Sparks and nanites flew through the air as swipe after swipe continued to cut through Ray's shield.
"Some events still had to happen. The Jackals are fanatics and their insane experimentation with cybernetics is a risk no one can take. History in all aspects has seen to it."
"Then you're hardly making a difference. Everything is just something for your own gain!"
Ray seemingly gave a sigh as he then counter-attacked with one blow that sent Margaret reeling back before another blow sent her to the ground. "You will see how much better things are once this is over."
Nanites then began to close in, seeking to lock Margaret in place to be captured.
"We're starting the time machine!" Guildstern announced on Margaret's private channel as she still recovered from the last blow. Someone else might be continuing their fight, but she placed faith in anyone who would continue the fight of the Shakespeareans in the past. Besides, Guildstern had always proven himself if Rise was anything to go by.
For a moment, a slight sigh of relief washed over the woman. Their sacrifices here just might allow the galaxy the miracle it needed to escape Ray's manipulations.
To her surprise, however, the time machine did not vanish with a flash of light. Instead the vessel slowly began to take to the air in a lifeless fashion, almost as if it had been lift to drift in space. Yet, the wondrous engines powering the unique machine still roared with an audible whine that signaled something had gone terribly wrong. The roar then turned into a deafening screech that pierced even the most sound-insulted rooms across Vegas. It forced everyone on the battlefield to cease fighting and turn to the time machine that cried out in its death throes.
Bolts of emerald energy began to shoot out from the time machine. More terrifying was that the bolts, when they struck nearby mechs, engulfed the unfortunate souls in radiance of unnatural light, vaporizing the subject in an instance. Already it had caused everyone near the fight to scatter and seek shelter.
The hull of the time machine itself then cracked. Beneath the tears glowed the unnatural light akin to the deadly bolts that had been witnessed, the vessel's frame seemingly overloading from the surge of eldritch energy. And slowly, a strange vortex began to consume the vessel from within, dragging it and anyone nearby into the unknown abyss of time and space.
Looking into the rift caused uneasiness and even stung Margaret's mechanical eyes with an unnatural pain. This was not a thing meant to be witnessed by mere mortals. But one thing could not cause the Shakespearens' leader to look away.
"Sprocket," Margaret could only mutter as she had to jump-jet away from the growing maw that consumed whatever was in its path. The cowgirl reached out with a hand towards her closest friend who sat in the cockpit of the vessel. Sprocket's panicking could only wrench Margaret's now-metaphorical heart from her chest.
Dark clouds then began to form that broke Margaret's focus. She turned her head up to thethe skies around Gonair had changed from the orange-crimson typical of Vegas to that of black and emerald with lighting bolts tracing the skies that looked to be slowly crashing towards earth. Even the most hardened mercenary or soldier would be terrified by these unseen events.
Whatever last ditch effort the crew had done to try and activate the time machine had begun tore through space and time.
Instinctive warnings then told Margaret to dodge to the right as the Hive came zooming past with a wickedly sharp spear. Ray missed leaving behind swarms that trailed behind him. The minturized weapons then leapt towards Margaret, seeking to disable Margaret's form, but the moment they seperated from their master, they were sucked into the vortex.
"What have you fools done?" Ray growled in anger as he then swung once more at Margaret, this time with a heavy axe. The man had always hated when the unpredictable happened.
Even as Ray continued to strike at her, Margaret's mind stayed focused on her surroundings that were growing more claustrophobic with each passing second.
Already she could see anyone with some sanity fleeing for their lives, trying to clear the area before the sky came crashing down on them. She could see a few members of her team making a run for it.
And that seemed to be the only course of action that hardly befitted anyone from the book of Rise or the heroes of 120AF.
Run.
