I know many of us are Game Masters (or Dungeon Masters, a title I tend to avoid due to how many jokes tend to be made). And since there are so many Game Masters I wanted to open the floor to fun stories, advice, thoughts, and discussion on the different philosophies that each GM brings to the table (pun intended). I have found that one of the greatest things is to learn not only from guides and videos but to talk to other people in the same field that share the passion and have some great insights.
Personally, I have been GMing Tabletop for about 4~5 years now, though mostly on-and-off due to work and school. However, I have found that my skills as a GM have grown rather quickly. I went from a kinda shy and bumbling GM to a louder, sillier, and much better managed one.
I have found that one of the most fun parts of GMing is having the world. Specifically when it comes to what happens in an environment. My group were going through a town checking every nook and cranny for traps. Cos I have a habit of hiding like 20 goblins behind a rock. Anyways, they are going through the town and perception checking every 10 feet. Finally one looks through a window and the player casually joked that it’d be someone’s bedroom and they’d be doing it.
Bam.
He scored a perfect perception check of watching two people going at it.
However, my favorite part and idea is the rolls. I never actually keep track of the scores and what would actually work unless it is combat (and even then, ehhh). I like what BrikWars did where heroes can do anything and if the roll seems good enough then it’s allowed. But failure gets more risky the further the player pushes their luck. Ying and Yang.
So what do you guys do? Are you benevolent GMs that help the players on their quest, or do you constantly put obstacles in their path to crush them?
Also, to players that may not have GMing experience but want to talk about their GMs, feel free to join in!
