Territorial Conflicts
1. Setting
Territorial Conflicts is based around the 1940s and 1950s involving a variety of factions seeking to gain either dominance over each other or removing the control of rivals from their realm.
2. Major Factions
Arkton Republic
Considered the greatest power on the planet, the Arkton Republic is a heavily industrialized state with a representative democracy and a high standard of living. Urbanized, large cities and tall skyscraper are common in the most developed areas, a testament to what they have achieved in the world with science and technology. Furthermore, the Arkton Republic is the oldest, having stood for well over four-hundred years with only the Old Tai-Wen Empire having run longer.
Many powers have sent people Arkton to learn from the nation and then try to recreate its success in their own countries. Yet, for all its splendor and power, the Arkton Republic is a greedy imperial power, constantly seeking resources to continue its drive, often in fear that a halt in progress could cause everything to crumble. This has led to a large part of the world being influenced by Arkton, be it through direct/indirect colonial rule or through advisers in other neighboring developed/developing states.
The people in the country, however, truly think that they can improve the world through the spreading of Arkton’s influence and the government is willing to listen to the people, a bit too much. With unregulated economics that have kept the good times rolling, the main body of government has become too afraid to delve into daily life to reform its system in fear of uprisings from powerful corporations and individuals who could easily rally people to their side. So instead, it draws its focus to areas outside of its borders to continue the state’s growth and maintain the status quo.
This has brought the Arkton Republic into conflict with those it has absorbed under its colonial rule; those who seek to build their own state without having to fear intervention and nationalistic states who want their own country to be great. How long the good times may last is unknown as its armies try to put down uprisings and halt the growing strength of neighboring powers
Karsomer State
The Karsomer State was formed in 1175 after overthrowing the Arkton Republic who had been exerting power on the continent of Temmar. Once a handful of kingdoms and small states sharing similar language and culture, but never truly unified under a single banner, the Karsomer State eventually formed out of external interference in daily affairs by the Arkton Republic coupled with nationalistic ideals and jealousy that saw people wanting a state that could rival the Arkton Republic.
Arkton's response resulted in a military invasion that led to what was nicknamed, by them, the 'Uncivil War'. What was expected to be a crushing blow against the upstarts in Karsomer resulted in a tiring guerrilla war within the many forests in what would be Karsomer territory. The cost on both sides was high with many Karsomer civilians being shot or deported as slave labor, yet, eventually after three grueling years, the Arkton Republic was forced to abandon its goals due to public opinion and the rising costs that could not be sustained. It was not long afterwards that the state was officially declared by the new government as the Arktons left, leaving a considerable amount of material and former projects behind.
To spite the Arkton Republic and to root out powerful corporation that they believed held too much power, the new government announced that it would become heavily involved in the life of the state, guiding it forward, similar to the Tai-Wen Empire, if with more freedom at the costs of being burdened by taxes and relocation of populations within to begin building up the state in key locations.
Controlled by the middle/upper-class along with members of the old nobility, the state of Karsomer is run by an elected council with a representative who is expected to act as the states figurehead and symbol. This representative is meant to rally the population and guide them towards new heights, all while the council does the tiring work of bureaucracy to achieve the goals set out.
With a growing industrial base, military, increasing urbanization and a strong sense of nationalism, many in Karsomer believe their time in the sun is now and already this has put them in conflict with the Arkton Republic. Even some of its neighbors have begun to raids its borders in hopes to weaken its power before another great power is formed.
Sixty years after these events, the Karsomer State continues to develop and has pacified its neighbours, incorporating them into its territory and now looks down to Yrelin which currently blocks access out of the straits with their developing navy who are hostile to the Karsomer State due to the Arkton Republic.

Tai-Wen Empire
Centralized and rapidly developing, what was once the Emerald Empire was reborn when Emperor Tai-Wen took power after a hundred-years of civil war that left the throne vacant.
The empire’s territory was ripped apart by outsiders seeking new resources, land, and exclusive trade rights that inevitably led to war that saw considerable diminishment of its boundaries. To stop this, the last emperor declared “The Restoration to Greatness” which saw many changes as intellectuals were sent to learn and modernize a country that had not yet caught up in the great race to industrialize by studying in abroad.
What was brought, however, was a civil war when intellectuals saw a chance to grab power due to an old, dying emperor. Soon, warlords replaced civil administrations and the royal family was ousted from the Emerald Star Palace leading to warfare not too different from the one which had brought the empire together where one side would seek to dominate the others.
Years passed with no end in-sight, but then Tai-Wen, first-born son of the royal family in hiding, returned to his beleaguered country with the required knowledge and vision. Slowly, he worked his way up, grabbing the support of small village communities to rebel against their warlords, promising “Peace amongst One People”. While not the most benevolent, with many being executed in wake of his return, his support grew with new victories and triumphs. Within five year, the remaining warlords were begging to pledge allegiance, but only those who truly impressed held any power, the Emperor seeing that a system of merit and capability was the way forward, even if it may one day jeopardize his family’s position.
While government is run by those of higher education and power, it does not mean the civilians and their plights are ignored. While lacking any form of democracy, they do have civil rights and are provided for by the state to ensure their continued support thanks to the Emperor’s travels amongst the lower-class during the reunification.
Having been returned to his throne, Emperor Tai-Wen set about strengthening his country, getting the project that his grandparents had started which was industrialization and centralization of the state by using the industries the warlords had created to supply their armies. Having done this, it has jump-started the progress considerably and the newly instated bureaucracy has begun bringing about his rule to the land.

3. Minor Factions
Liberation Front for Lyussus
Territory directly integrated into the Arkton Republic, Lyussus had been its own country until it was dissolved due to its defeat by neighboring states and divided up before finally being taken by the Arkton Republic several decades after. What it eventually turned into was an industrialized, urbanized sector used to produce many goods for consumption across the globe over the course of the century.
However, the people who had their origins in Lyussus resented the government for not allowing themselves to govern their own land and despite the improvements they sought independence through petition, using their given rights. Eventually, however, it turned to violence that caused the military to respond and since then, the industrial sectors in Lyussus have become a battleground with the majority seeking to break away who are supported not only by the industry already in place, but by external powers seeking to weaken the Republic.
The reason for this conflict and the people of the Arkton Republic supporting the government is due to the immigrant population who moved in, either to find work or start life anew in acquired territory. Numerous and plentiful, the Arkton population would prefer to stay and remain part of the Arkton Republic which has forced the government to respond in its attempts to maintain popular.
With the majority of the native Lyussinian being composed of the working-class and those who acquired university educations lacking experience, the rebellion has been difficult and a painful process with occasional infighting as sub-factions within the rebellion try to decide how things should run: should they return back to the old systems prior to the dissolution or embrace a more socialist route? The violence has also seen some thinking about trying to negotiate, but with the risk of being called out as ‘traitors’ few would do so.
While the Arktons maintain their own sectors, shielding their civilians from the fighting, the sense of nationalism within the Lyussinians with the majority wanting all their pre-dissolution borders restored and the Arktons to leave, no matter the cost.
