"Oh, do you want one?" Lee asked, looking down at Lucky. For his part, Lucky stared back wordlessly, but took the cup the trainer offered. The Pokémon eyed it suspiciously, then took a sip. His eyes widened, and he looked up at Lee again. "Luchito! Luchito!" he said excitedly, draining the cup. Clearly, he liked what he tasted, because a moment later the Pokémon had climbed up on Lee's foldaway table in a surprising show of acrobatic talent and grabbed another cup.
Forget tea - this was a beverage!
"Sir... really this will only take a second, I just need a signature," Della asked, but Professor Aspen just waved a hand vaguely in Lucky's direction. "My assistant can sign for me," he said. "Frankly, I've no idea what it is I'm signing for, anyway. I've more important things to think about than packages and parcels."
The professor paused, then looked back at Lucky, his eyes widening. "Lucky! Get down from there!" he said, striding across the room and lifting the Pokémon by the scruff of its neck. Lucky had already quaffed three of the cups and seemed intent on going for a third, flailing feebly in the Professor's grip. "I apologise," Professor Aspen said, looking at Lee. "I don't know what's gotten into him - oh!" He looked down at the box the Pokémon had retrieved, and after setting Lucky down, flipped the lid open. "At least he did something right. Gather round, please."

"I don't know what's gotten into him - oh!" He looked down at the box the Pokémon had retrieved, and after setting Lucky down, flipped the lid open. "At least he did something right. Gather round, please."
Professor Aspen rummaged through the box for a moment, then stood up, holding a vaguely rectangular device about six inches tall and and just under three inches wide. "This is the Generation Eight Pokédex," he said, "cutting-edge technology the League had shipped directly from the Maohi region. Like most Pokédexes, it serves as a digital encyclopedia for Pokémon, but this latest model also integrates all the features of the Pokégear and most of the features of your phones and other gadgets." He tapped the screen a couple of times, swiping through a variety of screens. "It can play music, make calls, send text messages, share data..." He turned it around, showing the back - the bottom half was the familiar red most commonly associated with Pokéballs, but the top was a matte black colour. "It also has a built-in camera for the quck and easy identification of Pokémon - and, of course, taking pictures." He snapped a photo of the group to demonstrate, the snap of a digital shutter loud in the small room. "There's a variety of colours, so feel free to pick one you like. They're solar powered and the battery can last for up to two weeks, so don't worry too much about charging them."
He dug around again, and pulled out a small backpack - red and white again, but this time with a Pokéball emblazoned on the back. "These are your backpacks - again, there's a few different colours to choose from. This backpack makes up the only 'official' uniform for teams taking part in the Climb, although there are a few other accessories for you to choose from." He unzipped the backpack and made a show of pulling out a variety of fashion accessories - wristbands, cap, scarfs, shoes, and - strangely - some kind of waffle iron. "You're required under competition rules to wear the backpack whenever you're travelling to help identify you. Anyone wearing a backpack is fair game for battles or challenges, so be on the lookout."
He rummaged around in the backpack again, and this time pulled out what most of you already had clipped to a belt or stuffed into a pocket - a fist-sized red-and-white Pokéball. "As part of the challenge, you're being given three Pokéballs - to start with, anyway. You can find or buy more as you travel. As you're probably aware, when a Pokémon is weak, you can throw a Pokéball to capture it - which brings me to the last part of your orientation..."
He placed the Pokéball back into the pack, and pulled out a small, hardcover handbook. "These are the rules of the Climb - think of it as your 'instruction manual'. Your copies are on your Pokédexes, but there's one hard copy for each team, just in case." He flicked through a few pages, then stopped. "It's a fairly substantial document, as you might imagine, but it's largely in line with your standard Pokémon Association rules - with a couple of exceptions. Because the Climb is a team format, battles operate a little differently. I'd suggest having a look at the rules before you leave."
He shut the book and dropped it back into the bag. "That's my part in the orientation over. I'll leave you to grab your preferred colour of starter kits, then there'll be a brief presentation and you can be on your way!" Professor Aspen stepped away from the box, letting you sort through the starter packs and equip yourselves. As soon as you all grabbed a backpack, you found the Pokédexes all began to vibrate. Taking them in hand, you watched as the screens snapped on to show a bizarrely-dressed man wearing a helmet shaped like a Pokéball and a flowing red scarf that seemed to flutter even indoors.
"Audacious adventurers! Brazen battlers! Courageous crusaders! Welcome... to the Climb!" The man said, his voice booming from the speakers of your Pokédexes. "When I, Pokéman, returned from Kanto and Johnto, I was determined for the world to see the wonders of Urobos; to travel its many winding ways and to deeply delve into its multitudinous mysteries!" He clenched a fist, holding it in front of him. "Now, you're about to set forth! For adventure!"
The screen changed, showing a map of Urobos from above. "Your path will be devilishly difficult and dauntingly dangerously, but take heart! Along the way, you will meet many allies who will guide you on your journey to GREATNESS! Heed their words and learn their lessons, for they will teach you the virtues of TRUTH, JUSTICE, and COURAGE you need to complete your arduous ascent of Mount Coda!"
The map lit up with lines, showing various routes across the island. "From Calara, you will travel west on Route 1, heading through the jungle towards Dronia City where you will find your first Gym! Defeat the Gym Leader and claim their badge, and you will have taken your first steps on the Climb! Who knows - maybe you and your new-found friends will be the ones to finally meet me face-to-face on Coda Peak!"
The screen went blank, leaving you to stare for a moment and try to dull the ringing in your ears. Professor Aspen emerged from behind a databank, grimacing and twisting a finger in one ear. "Er. Yes. Well, I can't fault his enthusiasm," he said. "As you heard, your path lies west through Route 1. It's quite a lively route, full of wild Pokémon. It's a designated capture zone, so feel free to pick up a few new friends if you're so inclined."
The Professor seemed to think for a moment, then dug into a pocket of his vest, producing a Pokédex of his own. "Two final things - I've sent you all my contact details and synced your Pokédexes to the storage facility here. Any excess Pokémon you capture will be sent back here for storage. They'll be well looked after, so don't worry about that." He tapped the screen a couple more times, then pocketed the Pokédex. A moment later, your own Pokédexes buzzed again. "I've also taken the liberty of setting up a fairly simple script I like to call 'Discovery.' While the Climb is your focus, there's a lot of places on the island that even someone as well-travelled as me hasn't been. If you find something particularly interesting - a rare Pokémon, some ancient artifacts, et cetera - snap a photo or video and it will run through my database here and alert me to anything unusual. I'll even transfer you a few cacao for your trouble. I've taken the liberty of transferring you each a starter allowance of 500c to pick up a few supplies before you leave town." He rubbed his hands together, looking around at you all.
"Unless you have any questions for me, that's all I've got for you. You're already a bit behind some of the other teams, but I wouldn't worry too much - it's a marathon, not a race. Before you leave, I'd suggest stopping by the local Pokémart and the Pokéshack to grab a bite to eat, but its up to you. Best of luck!"
